[-ʃ-], Sarvepalli, indischer Philosoph und Politiker, * Tiruttani (Tamil Nadu) 5. 9. 1888, ✝ Madras 17. 4. 1975; lehrte Philosophie u. a. an den Universitäten Mysore (1918-21) und Kalkutta (1921-31, 1937-41); 1936-52 war er Professor für östliche Religionen in Oxford. Er leitete 1946-50 die indische Delegation bei der UNESCO. 1949-52 war Radhakrishnan Botschafter in Moskau, 1952-62 Vizepräsident, 1962-67 Präsident der Indischen Union. In seinen Schriften vertrat er den Standpunkt des Neohinduismus (moderner Vedanta), der die indische Kultur mit einem vom Westen beeinflussten Begriffsapparat zu verstehen suchte und damit zu einer Neuinterpretation der indischen Tradition führte. Radhakrishnan erhielt 1961 den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels.
